The IMechE Group will hold its first Speak out for Engineering (SOFE) competition on the evening of 24th September. The competition is open to all IMechE Affiliate members, Associate members and those Members who have been professionally registered for 10 years or fewer. There are prizes and the winner will have the opportunity to compete at the Europe Region SOFE competition planned to be held in Madrid at the end of October.
The venue will be the Alstom offices in Baden, AG with a start time of 17.15. Refreshments will be available from 17.00.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
SOFE is aimed at promoting the ability to communicate mechanical engineering subjects effectively. It is specifically concerned with verbal and visual communication in describing and explaining technical subjects as well as designed to promote interest in the art of communication.
PRIZES
The prizes are funded directly from the IMechE’s Trust for Education and Research.
1st Prize - £300 plus a certificate and attendance at the Europe Region SOFE competition (expenses will be paid by the Group/Region) 2nd Prize - £200 plus a certificate
WHAT DO COMPETITORS HAVE TO DO?
Competitors give an oral presentation on a subject relating to mechanical engineering. Presentation slides, materials or props can be used to support a presentation. The presentation must be made by an individual regardless of whether the subject is part of a group technical project. Judges will expect more experienced competitors to have developed presentation skills and their marking assessment will reflect this. The duration of the presentation will be restricted to 20 minutes, followed by 10 minutes for discussion and questions from the panel of judges.
WHAT ARE COMPETITORS JUDGED ON?
90% of the total marks are given for presentation with only 10% for technical content. This ensures that, while all presentations must have mechanical engineering content in its broadest sense (purpose, research, design, feasibility, practicality), a topic concerning comparatively ‘low’ technology has an equal chance of success as one which is technologically very complex.
ELIGIBILITY TO ENTER THE COMPETITION
Competitors must belong to the IMechE and be either an Affiliate or Associate member or a Member who has been professionally registered for 10 years or fewer.
ENTRY RULES
Competitors are required to prepare a short written synopsis (200 words maximum) describing their presentation subject, which should be sent when registering their intention to enter the competition. The deadline date for registration is Monday 21 September. We will require a minimum of three competitors to hold the competition.
